IEC of Greater St. Louis seeks a Training Director

The Independent Electrical Contractors of Greater St. Louis is in search of an experienced journeyman electrician looking to make a longer term impact on the electrical field. You can do just that by joining our team as the Training Director and facilitate the learning occurring at the IEC. From apprenticeship to continuing education to representing independent contractors at a political level you will have a lasting impact on the electrical world for years to come.

What is the purpose of a Training Director?

The Training Director is responsible for the overall administration, quality, development and implementation of technical training and marketing of the apprenticeship and training programs and continuing education classes for members and non-members of the IEC of Greater St. Louis; including instructor and new apprentice recruitment. The Training Director will exercise discretion and independent judgement in carrying out these primary duties.

What do a Training Director do?

  1. Assure that all standards, Affirmative Action and other regulatory compliance are in place to maintain IEC’s certification and registration of Apprenticeship Program Standards with the Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship.
  2. Assure all individual apprentice files and computer records are accurate and maintained on a timely basis performing periodic audits as necessary.
  3. Research and/or develop and market technical and management continuing education programs to assist contractors and field employees in meeting their workforce development needs.
  4. Monitor all instructors, giving feedback and training for improvement.
  5. Recruit, screen and train all instructors for the apprenticeship program.
  6. Ensure the timely processing of all new apprentice applicants, including testing, accepting and filing applications, collecting application fees and storing application records as required.
  7. Direct and evaluate the performance of staff to achieve organizational objectives of training, recruiting, hiring and placement in training programs.
  8. Budget for the successful operation of the Apprenticeship and Training Programs and Continuing Education classes, staying within budget, unless approved by the Board of Directors.
  9. Develops and oversees the IEC workforce safety training.
  10. Secure materials needed to implement labs and training aids as required by the curriculum.
  11. Participate in IEC National and local A&T meetings in order to represent the interests of the St. Louis Chapter.
  12. Engage Associate members to improve IEC brand, further organizational objectives or creates valuable strategic relationships.
  13. Communicate to Executive Director any facility problems that exist and make recommendations for repair and maintenance.
  14. Update and maintain all marketing material for the Apprenticeship & Training Programs.
  15. Assure that Apprenticeship Handbooks remain updated, accurate and completed on a timely basis by the Apprenticeship Manager.
  16. Attend job fairs, career days and other group functions to recruit apprenticeship programs.
  17. Assess and plan for new and existing apprenticeship and training programs, assuring adequate facilities, equipment and staffing to carry-out the programs with high caliber.
  18. Plan and conduct special functions: Wire-Off & Trade Show, National Apprentice Week, Graduation, OSHA Safety Month. and others as required.
  19. Counsel and advise apprentices regarding use of absences, poor classroom performance and other issues pertinent to their success in the Apprenticeship Program, taking appropriate action as necessary, including termination from the program.
  20. Strives to develop a team atmosphere among all staff.
  21. Oversees the security and safety of apprentices.

This is a supervisory role.

  1. Reports directly to the Executive Director
  2. Works cooperatively with the Chairman of the A&T Committee.
  3. Works cooperatively with the Apprenticeship Manager
  4. Maintains personal contact with instructors and apprentices
  5. Maintains working relationship with contractors, associates, and government to enhance the image of IEC of Greater St. Louis

Desired Background & Experience

  • Management and organization development experience with the ability to motivate others to meet organizational needs and goals
  • Budgetary skills utilizing proper accounting techniques
  • Ability to effectively delegate responsibilities while holding direct reports responsible for organizational results
  • Understanding of construction industry with emphasis on electrical
  • Working knowledge of apprenticeship programs
  • Sales experience – any field with proven track record
  • Electrical Journeyman certificate
  • Education background


  • Training Director is a salaried position
  • 100% paid health for employee

  • 10 days paid time off per year after one-year (15 days at 5 years; 20 days at 10 years)
